Shop with the Amazon Smile Program to Support Charities

Friends,

As the holiday season approaches, if you have not already selected a charity with the Amazon Smile program, I’d like to ask that you go to SMILE.AMAZON.COM and select the Pomeranian Club of Central Virginia.  All donations are used to fund care for rescues until suitable permanent homes can be found.

There are hundreds of other charities to choose from if ours is not your cup of tea.

What is AmazonSmile?
Amazon Smile is a simple and automatic way for you to support your favorite charitable organization every time you shop, at no cost to you. When you shop at smile.amazon.com, you’ll find the exact same low prices, vast selection and convenient shopping experience as Amazon.com, with the added bonus that Amazon will donate a portion of the purchase price to your favorite charitable organization. You can choose from nearly one million organizations to support.

How much of my purchase does Amazon donate?
The AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price from your eligible AmazonSmile purchases.

How do I shop at AmazonSmile?
To shop at AmazonSmile simply go to smile.amazon.com from the web browser on your computer or mobile device. You may also want to add a bookmark to smile.amazon.com to make it even easier to return and start your shopping at AmazonSmile.

Can I use my existing Amazon.com account on AmazonSmile?
Yes, you use the same account on Amazon.com and AmazonSmile. Your shopping cart, Wish List, wedding or baby registry, and other account settings are also the same.

How do I select a charitable organization to support when shopping on AmazonSmile?
On your first visit to AmazonSmile smile.amazon.com, you need to select a charitable organization to receive donations from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. We will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make at smile.amazon.com will result in a donation.

Can I change my charity?
Yes, you can change your charity any time. Your AmazonSmile purchases after the change count towards your newly selected charity.

Fourth of July Tips for Pet Owners - DIY Thundershirt for Anxious Dogs

Fourth of July Tips for Pet Owners

1.    Do not leave animals outside AT ALL for the next several days to eliminate panic and runaways. Go outside WITH your animals, stay with them and, if necessary, take them out on a leash, even in their own backyard. This is not about how humans see it. This is about how animals see it and, to them, it's terrifying, loud, unknown, smells dangerous (burning) and threatening. Even if it's not close by, animals' sense of smell and hearing is MUCH greater than ours.
2.    If fireworks are close by or large enough, the concussive impact of the explosion can be felt by animals further increasing their fear. Animals will choose flight over fight instinctively so be certain they wear collars with tags showing CURRENT contact info!!!
3.    Put a tag on all of your pets. EVEN INDOOR DOGS!
4.    Keep a TV on a station or show that is loud to drown out outside noises. We prefer a TV over music because the images can help to distract the dog and interrupt focus. Also, we carry something called a Happy Hoodie that is comfortable and can be worn over their ears.
5.    There are a lot of calming products that come in liquid tinctures, chewables, capsules and powders. Also, CBD oil for high high anxiety furr-kids.
6.    Crating is beneficial during this time because it helps the dog feel more secure.
7.    As seen in this photo you can wrap a dog with an ace bandage but any tight t-shirt will provide that same hugged feeling, helping the dog feel more secure.

18 years has gone by so fast! Happy Anniversary Honey!

I often hear people say they love their partner more today than they did the day they married them.  To me that sounds a bit cliché and not quite accurate.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t love him any less, but I wouldn’t have married him if I wasn’t head over heels in love with him.  What I can say is that I like him more today than I did the day we were married.  Does that sound strange?  Let me try to explain.

We’ve known each other for 22 years, been together for 20 and married for 18.  Of course, I liked him when we got married, but the more you know someone, the more you like or dislike them.  Over the course of these past 18 years I have gotten to know the man my husband was and watched him mature and grow into the man he is today.

He has always supported me in whatever I want to do and has been my strength when I needed to do things I couldn’t have done alone.  He has never wavered when my health suffered and has spent many nights on the couch because he was afraid of disturbing me during the night and he wanted me to get the best rest possible.  I never wonder or worry about having his support, I know it will be there.  Even if he doesn’t agree, he will never let me stand alone.

Even now, I learn new things about him.  Sometimes those things are profound and I can’t believe I didn’t know that already and sometimes, not so much (like last week when I found out he’s kinda named after Jerry Lewis? Eww).

I’m not saying it’s been perfect or easy.  We have been tested by illness, our families, and sometimes life in general.  Occasionally we get on each other’s nerves and once or twice a year there may even be a silent treatment thrown in for a couple hours.  However, you will be hard pressed to see us out and about not holding hands or with my arm in his, we never go a day without saying “I Love You” at least a couple of times, and he comes to the bedroom every night to tuck me and the dogs in and give us all good night kisses.

So, while I love him and can’t imagine my life without him, I truly like, and have a deep respect for him as a man, a friend, a lover, a protector, and most of all, as my husband.

Chemo Tips & Tricks to Help Make Treatment a Little Better

(A beloved family member is starting their chemo journey.  I am re-posting this for him and his family in the hopes they might find some useful information.)

1. For mouth pain-Buy Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash (it’s made for dry mouth sufferers). Using these items helps the mouth pain and helps keep your mouth a little moister. Walgreen’s sells it.

2. For dry skin-Chemo dries out your body quite a bit. Switch to a moisturizing soap like Aveeno. Cetaphil lotion is non-irritating, non-greasy and quick absorbing (my dermatologist recommended these).

3. Adriamycin - The Adriamycin pretty much guarantees hair loss. Mine started falling out on day 14 after my first treatment.

4. For nosebleeds-After about 5 treatments, my mucous starting getting a little bloody, especially in the morning. My Oncologist said to use a saline spray to moisten the nasal passages, but this didn’t work very well for me. I bought a case of the small kid size Gatorades and drank one a day. Problem solved.

5. Nausea - If you get nauseated during a treatment, ask the nurse to slow down the drip (Decadron). Adding 15 minutes to the drip really reduced the discomfort. They didn’t tell me this until about treatment #9.

6. For hip pain-If you’re white cells drop and you have to get Neupogen shots, they can cause a great deal of discomfort. My hips and legs hurt so bad after the shots, Vicodin wouldn’t help. I know this sounds weird, but take an anti-histamine. The pain is caused by a histamine reaction and most of your white cells are produced in your hip region. One Zyrtec later, everything was fine.

7. Numbing Cream - If you don’t have it already, ask for Lidocaine Cream. Apply to your port area 2-3 hours before chemo and cover with Saran Wrap to allow better absorption without messing up your clothes. This numbs the injection site. Also works well for celebratory tatoo when cancer free!

8. For the ladies (Especially if you're amply endowed) - Before having your port inserted, invest in a sports bra. The weight of your breast can cause the scar to widen because of the pulling during the healing process. I learned this the hard way. When I had my port removed, I explained this to the surgeon and he cut the scar tissue away so I could start with a fresh wound. He found it amusing, but said he had never thought of that (he looked about 20 years old). I explained to him that he only sees us lying down and wouldn't realize they were D cups when they spread out.:-)

9. Weight Gain - If you gain >15% of your body weight and are not having difficulty with nausea, ask your doctor to decrease your Decadron a little.

10. Nausea - One of my readers used Prilosec to help alleviate nausea during treatment.

11. Tylenol - If you aren't already given it, ask for Tylenol at the beginning of treatment.  It helps the discomfort of treatment and any headaches from chemo.

If you have any tips and tricks to share, I'd love to hear them and add them to the list. Click on the comments link below and submit them. Please let me know if you found these tips helpful.
