Perfect timing on our 17th Anniversary

17 years ago Jerry came into my life and made it so much better!  As I am sitting here going through boxes for the yard sale tomorrow, I came across a crumpled piece of paper.

It's message is from that night...

Flapjack - Rescued March 2002 - Left us September 11, 2014

I read something this week that really rang true for me:

"He truly was one of a kind.  We hope that we gave him enough good memories to wipe out any bad ones that came before"

Flapjack cheated death twice, unfortunately the third time we weren't as fortunate.

In March 2002, when we first met Flapjack at the Animal Defense League he had been pulled out of a kill shelter one day before he was scheduled to be euthanized.  We decided he was the dog for us and adopted him that day.

He rode home in Jerry's lap and became an instant daddy's boy!  The vet had estimated his age to be between 3-4 years old and he had been picked up running loose.  It was obvious a man had abused him before with a belt.  Every time Jerry went to take off his belt, Flapjack would cower at his feet and curl up in a ball terrified.  Thankfully, he was able to see that no one was going to hurt him anymore (except when he stole mommy's quesadilla.  He got a spanking for that!) and turned into a snuggle bug.

A Prescription for Cyanide

A nice, calm and respectable lady went into the pharmacy, walked up to the pharmacist, looked straight into his eyes, and said, 'I would like to buy some cyanide.

'The pharmacist asked, 'Why in the world do you need cyanide?' The lady replied, 'I need it to poison my husband.

'The pharmacist's eyes got big and he exclaimed, 'Lord have mercy! I can't give you cyanide to kill your husband.

That's against the law!I'll lose my license! They'll throw both of us in jail! All kinds of bad things will happen.
Absolutely not! You CANNOT have any cyanide!' The lady reached into her purse and pulled out a picture of her husband in bed with the pharmacist's wife.

The pharmacist looked at the picture and replied, 'Well now, that's different. You didn't tell me you had a prescription.'

There have been a few inquiries about what we are feeding Willie to help him shed a few pounds.  He seems to be doing well with the change in diet and has adjusted without any stomach upset.  

He has gone from 14.5 to 14 in 2 weeks.  I had hoped to be a few more ounces along, but Mother Nature threw a wrench in those plans with this winter in ?March weather.  Only managed to get 3 walks in.

He is still VERY food motivated and a little piggy!  But his meals are twice as large as he was receiving using only dry kibble (he was getting 1/4 cup twice a day), so he is getting fuller and not so much a piggy.  

He actually walked by our dogs bowl without diving in after I forgot to pick it up.  I was shocked!  The first day he was here he ate all 3 of our dogs dinner before I realized it.  And that was after he had eaten his!

A Letter to My Childhood Dog Wiggles, Who Lived in the Basement and Backyard | Dogster

This story made my eyes well up with tears and my heart ache with loneliness.

"I’m sorry, Wiggles.

I was only a child and the rules set by my parents I had to abide by. How they felt a dog should live was not my desire.

In fact, I cried over you. To this day I still have occasional dreams of you outside in the elements, alone. I see you in the cold basement. I remember you whimpering for human contact, attention.

Perhaps you played a role in shaping my character, mainly my fervor to aid creatures in need and connect with them all via limitless love.

I remember one day after grade school let out, climbing into our family station wagon to meet you, a black-and-white Lab-mix pup. I vaguely remember that my mom saw you with other pups in a newspaper ad by a local humane society. She picked you out. You had a typical Lab personality, happy and energetic, and you earned the name Wiggles because that’s what you did.
