Forest Hills Park Lake, Richmond, VA - September 2011

Pictures of the 105 acre  park by our house.  We take the dogs for walks around the lake on the paved trails and when we don't have the dogs with us we go hiking on the unpaved walking and mountain bike trails.

What makes this park so awesome is that it's just across the James River from downtown Richmond and a quarter mile from our house  Eventually we want to bike this park, but we need to work up to that so for now we bike around out neighborhood and Carter Jones Park which is on the next block from our house.

I can't wait for the foliage to start changing in October to get some really awesome pictures!

Click "Read More" to see some beautiful pictures of the park.

Is Junk Food Really Cheaper?

THE “fact” that junk food is cheaper than real food has become a reflexive part of how we explain why so many Americans are overweight, particularly those with lower incomes. I frequently read confident statements like, “when a bag of chips is cheaper than a head of broccoli ...” or “it’s more affordable to feed a family of four at McDonald’s than to cook a healthy meal for them at home.”
This is just plain wrong. In fact it isn’t cheaper to eat highly processed food: a typical order for a family of four — for example, two Big Macs, a cheeseburger, six chicken McNuggets, two medium and two small fries, and two medium and two small sodas — costs, at the McDonald’s a hundred steps from where I write, about $28. (Judicious ordering of “Happy Meals” can reduce that to about $23 — and you get a few apple slices in addition to the fries!)

What Would You Do If Your Daughter Left This Note For You?

A mother passing by her daughter's bedroom was astonished to see the bed was nicely made and everything was picked up. Then she saw an envelope propped up prominently on the center of the bed. It was addressed, "Mom." With the worst premonition, she opened the envelope and read the letter with trembling hands:

Dear Mom:

It is with great regret and sorrow that I'm writing you. I had to elope with my new boyfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with Dad and you. I've been finding real passion with George and he is so nice-even with all his piercings, tattoos, beard, and his motorcycle clothes. But it's not only the passion Mom, I'm pregnant and George said that we will be very happy. He already owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. He wants to have many more children with me and that's now one of my dreams too. George taught me that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone and we'll be growing it for us and trading it with his friends for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the meantime, we'll pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so George can get better; he sure deserves it!! Don't worry Mom, I'm 15 years old now and I know how to take care of myself. Someday I'm sure we'll be back to visit so you can get to know your grand children.

Your daughter, Judith...

SunRun Solar Blog - Sweet Solar Home

SunRun Solar Blog - Sweet Solar Home

The perks of a solar home go well beyond the savings on your electricity bill. In fact, the slew of financial benefits gained by solar homeowners only begin to scratch the surface of the true value of a solar system. Once you start producing your own clean energy, the perks just keep adding up.
A home with a solar system on the roofAdd value to your home – A study released in April 2011 by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory found that solar boosts the resale value of homes by about $6 per watt. On a mid-sized home, a 6kW system can add as much as $33,000 to that home’s resale value. As an added bonus, the value of a home solar system will actually appreciate as utility rates go up.
Add nothing to your tax load – Thanks to a state-by-state property tax incentive, installing a solar system on your home will add nothing to your tax load.
Control your electricity rates – Utility rates are getting downright volatile, and can increase without warning, month-to-month. As demand increases and fossil fuels grow scarcer, costs will only increase at a steeper rate over time. While utility prices rise at random, solar locks in your rate, allowing you to plan your future with confidence.

Marc Wolf: Celebrating the End of Don't Ask, Don't Tell

Marc Wolf: Celebrating the End of Don't Ask, Don't Tell:
In 1996, when I began interviewing gays and lesbians in the American armed forces for the play and now film Don't Ask Don't Tell, I was stunned by the enormous gap felt and lived by this silenced community who, when joining the military, had sworn to protect and defend the United States Constitution.
Because so many gay and lesbian Americans do join the military for patriotic reasons, for "love of country," it has been especially painful to witness and record their enforced silence, the destruction of their careers, their courts-martial, humiliations and even imprisonment due to the discriminatory policy of an institution to which they would sacrifice their lives.

A day in the life of a dog

12:37 AM: Thought I heard something outside so I barked and barked and barked until my owner was awake to check it out!

1:19 AM: A shadow moved across the window! It could be an attack! I howled and barked for 5 minutes straight until my master told me to "shut the Hell up!" See if I warn him again! I hope whatever is out there eats him! =(

2:58 AM: Definitely heard something that time! Barked at top of my lungs until both of my owners woke up! I could tell they were awake because my master threw a shoe at me as a reward! I chewed on it for 30 minutes before I fell asleep. And I thought he was mad at me. I have a lot to learn!

4:11 AM: Lots of rain and really loud noise outside with bright flashes of light! I cried and whimpered and jumped in the bed! Then there was another loud noise and I peed everywhere! I was afraid my master would rub my nose in it like he usually does but he was asleep so he didn't notice! They'll see it in the morning but by then they'll never know which of the 3 of us did it! I'm in the clear =D

8:02 AM: My owners are awake and they're taking me outside! Hooray! Hooray! Hooray! Hooray! I jumped around everywhere to celebrate! I came that close to wee-weeing right there on the floor because I was so excited. But I didn't because I'm a good boy!!!

The Chinese Buffet - YOU GO NOW!!!

This is one of my all time favorite routines! I think he started it in the 90's, but I still laugh every time he does it!

I need some advice from my nursing and/or athletic friends about electrolyte replacement?

My seizure medicine has side effects of  extreme thirst, sweating and decreased sodium levels (not just from the diaphoresis).  I cannot tolerate heat at all without breaking a sweat especially on my forehead.  Not to mention I am out of shape and have to work up to greater distances.

My husband and I have just bought bicycles and we live a quarter mile from a park with hiking/biking trails and we want to be more active.  However after a short distance on the bike, I am already drenched, my hands are trembling so badly I can hardly hold my keys to unlock the door and I feel nauseous.

In the course of a half hour, doing a moderate workout at the gym, I can easily go through a liter of water.  I am worried about drinking too much water (Hyponatremia) and I don't want to drink the standard sports drinks (Gatorade, SportAde, etc...) they are just too strong for me and I think they are meant for more physical athletes.

My questions needing help with are these:

Wicker Dog (or other pet) Bicycle Basket

Took Romeo for our first Mommy/Doggy bike ride today.

He didn't like the basket until we started moving, the he just kicked back and let the "breeze" go through his hair. Maybe when mommy gets in a little better shape, we'll be able to work up to the "wind" in his hair!

My basket came with the main attachment strap that goes in the bottom of the basket in addition to 2 smaller adjustable straps that attach to rings at the top on either side.  I suppose they could be used for an additional dog (if very light dogs) or for keys or maybe just to add a little more security to your pup.

I chose to leave to top down for now until Romeo and I both get used to it.

A puppy's unbelievable encounter - painful photo

I have got to stop reading these types of stories.

When I see stuff like this it has such an emotional impact on me that Jerry doesn't like me to read these kind of stories and would rather I not be subscribed to a lot of the rescue groups, shelters and other animal sites.

The more attached I get to my dogs, the more depressed I get when I read stuff like this.  It actually does tear my heart up.

Not to mention they piss me off to high hell!  How in the hell could someone want to have their dog "destroyed" because he got stuck by a porcupine!  The owners should be charged with animal abuse for leaving their dog like that and not seeking vet care.

Here is the story:

John Pinette: I'm Starvin'!

Just watched this on Netflix, Hilarious!  He's just as good as he's always been.  I'm glad he came back to stand up.  His routines are timeless!

TeleBrands Deluxe Doggy Steps - Inexpensive and Useful

We recently moved into a home with all wood floors, even in the bedrooms.  Our pups have always had carpeted bedrooms to give them better traction to jump on the bed and the wood floors were making both jumping up and down more difficult for them.  To make matters even more challenging, when we moved we purchased a new mattress set that, at the top, is 26 inches off the ground.   There is a gap between the top of the stairs and the top of the bed, but the pups run up the steps onto the bed just like regular stairs, so there was not a need to purchase stairs that were 26 inches tall (and easily would have been $100+).

To put that in perspective, we have Miniature Pinscher/Chihuahua mix (Flapjack) and 2 Pomeranian's (Romeo 7 pounds, Cupid 11 pounds). The tallest one stands about 8 inches at the shoulders. In addition to the pups just being small and the bed being tall, Flapjack is around 13 and has a heart murmur and a sliding patella (knee cap). Cupid is a very insecure jumper on the most solid of surfaces (unless your waving a treat then he can jump buildings in a single bound).  Finally, little Romeo is a mamma's boy that is totally oblivious to how delicate he can be.  If mom gets up in the middle of the night he has to follow her and make sure everything is kosher.  He flies off the bed and sometimes slips on the wood floor with a Klunk sound.

We decided on the Telebrands Doggy Steps for several reasons:

How could a mother "never like" her child?

This was a refreshing topic to see on such a mainstream program as I have wondered about the same thing most of my adult life.

Harrison Thanksgiving plans

6 people, one bathroom? hmmm, besides that I'm getting really excited about Thanksgiving and hoping our plans workout.  It will be hard for us to go anywhere having just started new jobs (hopefully) so, I'm really looking forward to some of my cousins coming down from New England.   I had a great time with them last December so it should be a wicked time.

I haven't had a Thanksgiving with another Harrison since I was in grade school! (except Ken of course, but I've barely seen him since 1996, last Thanksgiving with him was probably 1992 or 1993)

It would be awesome if our first Thanksgiving in our new home was filled will family and fun.

Our first month in Richmond, the other River City

Downtown, seen from across James river
Here's a little recap:

  • One blown tire
  • Two tow trucks
  • One rental car
  • Locked out of house
  • VA's mutant fleas
  • One Earthquake
  • Seven aftershocks
  • One Hurricane named Irene
  • Twenty-eight hours without power
  • And a partridge in a pair tree!

All in all we were very fortunate.  Our power was among the first to be restored out of the 1.2 million Virginians that lost it.  I think the reason we were restored so fast is that we are on the same grid as the Fire Station on the the next block and emergency responders had first priority.  Our poor neighbors in back still don't have power 5 days later.
