Our 1st Veggie Garden - Week 5 - Our Free, Recycled Compost Bin

Spent this weekend doing some transplanting, splitting and thinning.

Still haven't harvested anything, BUT we finally have zucchini!  We had 2 girl flowers that have produced fruit and there are several more girl stalks coming in.  Yay!!!  I think in a couple of weeks we are actually going to have a problem with way too many zucchini. all 8 plants I got from the school have taken off.  I'd love to give some away.
Soon you will be in my mouth little ones!!
The cucumbers have done quite well and I am pretty sure a couple of them will be working their way into my salad bowl by weeks end!  I can't wait.  Jerry picked some cucumbers up for me yesterday and they were a dollar each.  Right now the store bought cucumbers are sliced up with some fresh dill from the garden waiting to be in my tummy.

The view under out cucumber net/trellis right now.
Now for our big project this weekend, the free, re-purposed, compost bin.

The Sex Life of a Zucchini

A friend of mine asked me how to tell the difference between a male and a female zucchini flower.  Now my friend is a beer guzzlin, gun totin, redneck; so I'm adding some pictures to help her out!  (Muah!  You know I love you P!)

So if you are interested in learning the differences between a male and female zucchini flowers, click below to see more.

Cattle Guards (FYI-This is a joke)

For those of  you who have never traveled to the west, or  southwest, cattle guards are horizontal steel  rails placed at fence openings, in dug-out  places in the roads adjacent to highways  (sometimes across highways), to prevent cattle  from crossing over that area.  For some  reason the cattle will not step on the "guards,"  probably because they fear getting their feet  caught between the rails.

A few  months ago, President Obama received and was  reading a report that there were over 100,000  cattle guards in Colorado .  The Colorado  ranchers had protested his proposed changes in  grazing policies, so he ordered the Secretary of  the Interior to fire half of the “cattle” guards  immediately!

Don't Know Why the Guys Complain?

It’s not DIFFICULT to make a woman happy. A man only needs to be:

1. a friend

2. a companion

3. a lover

4. a brother

5. a father

6. a master

7. a chef

8. an electrician

9. a carpenter

10. a plumber

Our 1st Veggie Garden - Week 4 - Beefsteak is Blooming!

Last Sunday I pruned a lot of side shoots off of our Beefsteak plant.  Jerry was a little worried I had overdone it, but it seemed to have the perfect thing to do.  Within 2 days we had 5 new tomatoes and by this weekend we were up to 12!

We are very excited!

Our zucchinis are flowering like crazy but so far no female flowers.  The cucumbers on the other hand have taken off.

A Budget Garden Tote (or perhaps a craft tote?)

I wanted a tote to carry my gardening accessories around out back with me.  I was using a bucket, but it wasn't very organized.

I couldn't find anything in the stores and everything online was too pricey or not what I was looking for.  I was wandering around the house looking for something I could use when Viola!; a diaper bag!

My solution was a mini diaper bag.  The exterior bottle pockets hold my hand tools perfectly!  Not to mention there are hundreds of diaper bags out there to choose from.  It also wipes clean with just a damp cloth.

Problem Solved!

Our New Insect Repelling & Cooking Planter Box

I love keeping the back door open, but we don't have a screen door and I hate flies in the house.  We have a temporary screen hanging with a tension rod but it does not keep all the flies out, especially with the dogs running in and out.

I knew the Citronella plant repelled mosquitoes, and remembering how bad the fleas were when we got here last August and in light of the warm winter I thought I'd look for flea and/or fly repellent plants.

I found what I was looking for and as a bonus,
you can cook with them also!

Our 1st Veggie Garden - Week 3 - Adding Some Color Front & Back

This week we decided to add some color to the garden and front porch with some pots.

Our little corner garden in the backyard
These Fuschsia's caught my eye at the Wal-Mart Garden Center and for $4.00, I snatched 2 of them!
They're supposed to attract Hummingbirds so I hung on the front porch hoping to see some.
I did transplant them to a hanging basket so they would be higher & more visible.
Aren't these gorgeous?  The picture doesn't do them justice!
They are also Calibrachoa (a member of the Nightshade family)
like the ones below and will attract butterflies to our front porch!

Happy Mother's Day!!!!

Our 1st Veggie Garden - Week 2 - Creative Trellising

The kids kicked back all afternoon just watching
Another lovely Saturday in the yard with my hubby.  We planted the veggies last week and gave them a week to recover from the trauma of being transplanted and get their roots stretched out.  This week was time to cage/stake/trellis the tomato, cucumber and zucchini.

This morning as we were getting ready to go shopping, I thought we would try something first.  We have a tree that needed some branches trimmed because they were getting too close to the electric wires, so I thought maybe we could make a trellis.  It would save us a good chunk of change while also recycling the tree branches from our Maple Tree.

Tree that needed pruning
We stripped the branches we cut off the tree

9 Tips to Maintain Your Laptop Or Notebook

9 Tips to Maintain Your Laptop Or Notebook

Many people often make mistakes in maintaining a laptop, so the laptop gets damaged. Here are tips on maintaining a laptop or notebook:

1. Do not put the notebook on a soft surface like a chair made of foam, bed and carpet. Because, it will inhibit the flow of air at the bottom of the notebook, and can cause overheating.

2. If you download software from the Internet, do not be careless. Use genuine software from the l notebook. However, if you want to use the software from the Internet, make sure you scan with antivirus software.

3. Do not put the notebook on the floor, because your kids can step on the notebook. In addition, it will be quick dirty with dust.

An Amusing Evening at our House...

So I ordered some chewies for the kids in the "small" size.  Look at what I got:
Romeo with the filled shinbone

He is trying to get his bottom jaw in there
as far as he can!

It's longer than his head

Flapjack finally got hold of it and ran for cover!

Dear 16-year-old-me,

With the Winter skies fading away and Spring right around the corner, I thought it was a good time to re-share this video with you as a reminder that as you head out into the sun, please remember to protect yourself now, against cancer later.

You don't have to be in the sun everyday to develop melanoma.  Cloudy days and tanning beds can be even more dangerous because people are under the misguided belief that they are safe because they are not in the sun.
